Writer/Director Charles Messina is a native New Yorker and a graduate of New York University. Messina is probably best known for directing Cirque Jacqueline, the critically acclaimed one-woman show about the life of Jackie Kennedy Onassis, starring Andrea Reese. The Boston Globe called the show, “Memorable...An absorbing and dignified one woman show.” Backstage hailed Cirque Jacqueline as “Magnifique!” Messina also wrote and directed the off-Broadway hit monodrama Mercury: The Afterlife and Times of a Rock God, about the life of rocker Freddie Mercury, which The New Yorker called “Powerful!” and Backstage praised as “A powerhouse of emotional and sexual energy.” Other noteworthy stage credits include directing Richard Vetere's Rockaway Boulevard and Johnny on the Pony (starring Dan Lauria), and Art Metrano's Accidental Comedy. In 2006, Messina will direct Vincent Pastore in the powerful new drama, Homeland. In addition, Messina is set to direct the musical Be My Love, about the tragic life of legendary tenor Mario Lanza. The show is being produced by Sonny Grosso and Phil Ramone.
As screenwriter, Messina has written the feature film Spy, starring Vincent Pastore, Frank Vincent and Ben Curtis, which is now in post production for a 2006 release, as well as the upcoming feature They're Just My Friends, starring Malik Yoba, Al Snow, and Bruce Altman, which will be released theatrically in Spring 2006.
Messina is co-founder of NahNotOutsideMyHouse! Productions, Inc. The unique company name comes from the phrase uttered by legendary tough guy Robert DeNiro to Messina when the young writer tried to hand a script to the actor outside his downtown home. Cindy Adams of The NY Post jokingly wrote, “NahNotOutsideMyHouse! Productions is going to need the widest stationery in captivity.”
